Eco-friendly tips for your car and car insurance

Green CarEarth Day got us thinking about how people just like you and I can do our part to keep the earth clean.  If buying the newest hybrid is out of your budget, and reusing or repurposing every discarded item in your house is a bit too labor intensive, what “green” options are left for you?

To have an environmentally friendlier life simply remember the old environmental adage of “Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle.”  Most times we apply this motto to our grocery and garbage habits, but I want to focus on our driving habits.

Reduce:  Going paperless

One easy way to be “green” is with your car insurance.  Today there are a number of auto insurance companies that are committed to reducing waste by providing customers with the option to go paperless.  Going paperless means that you receive all your insurance documents from your auto insurance company electronically, including any future policy changes or claims related documents.  What is great about being paperless is that you get to choose which documents are critical to print, like your policy ID cards and roadside assistance cards, and which documents are better left electronically filed.

Reuse:  Your old tires

This may be a bit out there, and I understand you may be hesitant, but old tires can be reused for a number of great projects around the home.  Reused tires make great plant holders, swing sets for kids, backyard fitness training courses for the more adventurous, and a fun decorative addition to your yard.  For tips on how to create your own colorful reused tire yard display, check out one of our favorite Pinterest boards from Continental Truck Tires.

Recycle:  Your “ride”

You and your car have been together for years.  You have had many adventures, and the years have taken their toll on your faithful friend.  What to do when your car dies?  One great “green” program that will help dispose of your car is your local Recycle Rides program.  When you recycle your car it is repaired and donated to a family or organization in need.  Those cars that cannot be repaired are used for their salvageable parts.

Now you know the ways to be “green” when it comes to your car insurance and car habits.  By making a few changes you will see the difference in your waste impact and savings benefit.  Don’t forget to share these tips with your friends and family members—together we can make a difference.
