Summer car accessories to keep you and your car cool

Image- 20130529- Car sunshadeWe’ve all returned to our vehicles on a hot summer’s day and opened the door to be greeted by what feels like an inferno. We promise ourselves that next time we’ll do something about it but often do not get around to it. Well, here at Elephant Auto Insurance we’ve compiled a handy list of top tips to help keep your car cool.

Park in the shade

Sounds obvious, and it is, but finding a shady area to park can certainly help, particularly if you’re leaving your vehicle for an extended period. Try walking a little farther to your destination if necessary. Alternatively, consider parking in a covered parking lot if the option is available. The cost might be worthwhile if you can return to a cool vehicle!

Use sunshades

Put up a windshield sunshade when you leave the car for more than a few minutes, but don’t forget to place the sunshade facing the sun. These summer car accessories will help keep your car cool until your return.

Additionally, sunshades for the side windows can help block out the sun and keep passengers cool. Be careful not to place them anywhere that might obscure the driver’s view if being used whilst on the road.

Children’s car seat sunshade covers

Fastening your child in to his or her car seat can be a difficult task, even without the seat and buckles being too hot to touch. You’re in luck because summer car accessories are not just for adults anymore.  These helpful child car seat covers can help keep your child’s car seat comfortable during warm weather. Elastic sizing means they should fit most car seats and help to protect against heat when not in use.

Car dashboard cover

Dash surfaces, particularly vinyl, can really heat up during hot weather, making the interior uncomfortable and can cause damage such as fading over the long term. Dashboard covers, typically fabric or upholstered, can help protect your car dash against heat.

Blankets over leather or vinyl car seats

Leather or vinyl car seats can also really heat up during high temperatures. Try and minimize this by using car seat covers or simply use blankets.  Your next favorite summer car accessories could already be in your home.  Before you pack up your winter blankets, set a few aside and spare your seat the heat.

Keep possessions out of the sun

It’s a good idea to keep possessions out of view anyway, but leaving them out in the sun can also cause damage. Put them in the trunk.

Pack water

Whether you’re planning a long road trip or a short drive, take bottles of water or other drinks to help keep you and any passengers hydrated. Consider this a part of your emergency kit.

And finally: Never leave children or pets in the vehicle

Even with a cracked window, pets or kids should never be left in the car. The inside of a car can reach dangerous and even deadly temperatures.

So there you have it: some top summer car accessories and tips to help you stay comfortable in your vehicle. But have I missed anything? What steps do you take to make your car cooler? Why not share them with us here.
