The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) on Wednesday, December 4 announced a new “Virginia is for Lovers” license plate. The design, to launch early 2014, will become the new standard issue plate for the state and features the famous Virginia slogan.

Unveiled by Governor Bob McDonnell at the Greater Richmond Convention Center, the new plate design will be available from the Virginia DMV beginning March 2014 and will replace the current standard blue and white Virginia license plate.

Virginia license plate to help promote tourism

The design is the result of collaboration between Virginia Tourism Corporation and Virginia DMV. The plate prominently features the official travel and tourism site, Virginia.org, at the bottom of the plate along with a red heart. It is hoped that the design of the new plates will help promote tourism and business when seen outside of the state.

The DMV have confirmed that the plates will be issued starting March 1st, 2014, and is the first design change since 2007, when the state marked the 400th anniversary of Jamestown.

Virginia is for Lovers celebrates 45 years

The timeless slogan, “Virginia is for Lovers”, celebrates its 45th anniversary in 2014 and was originally developed in 1969 by a Richmond marketing company that went on to become The Martin Agency.

In 2009, the phrase was inducted in to the Madison Avenue Advertising Walk of Fame, joining past winners such as UPS and US Marine Corps. Winners of the award have their name feature on plaques on Madison Avenue between 49th and 50th streets in Manhattan, New York City.
